Joint Forces Neutralize 27 ADF Rebels and Rescue 40 in Operation Shujaa

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have successfully executed a joint operation against the Allied Democratic Front, resulting in the death of 27 terrorists and the rescue of 40 captives. The operation, named Operation Shujaa, yielded nine firearms and a cache of ammunition and communication equipment.

Joint military forces comprising the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) have successfully conducted an offensive operation, resulting in the elimination of 27 members of the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) and the liberation of 40 captives. This operation, designated Operation Shujaa, occurred within the Biakato and Mambasa territories, located approximately 67 kilometers northwest of Beni in the Ituri province. According to Major Bilal Katamba, the spokesperson for the UPDF Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa, several ADF rebels sustained injuries during the confrontation. The joint forces managed to recover a significant haul of military equipment, including nine firearms—comprising eight sub-machine guns and one PK machine gun—alongside various rounds of ammunition and tactical items, such as six communication walkie-talkies. The operation also led to the apprehension of assorted personal items, including medications for human use. A single soldier from the joint task force is reported to have been wounded and is currently receiving treatment at UPDF Muhote Hospital. Among those rescued, a majority are identified as Ugandan nationals, primarily women and children hailing from the Busoga sub-region. It is notable that the ADF remains affiliated with the Islamic State of Central Africa Province (ISCAP).

The Allied Democratic Front (ADF), historically rooted in opposition to the Ugandan government, has increasingly aligned itself with extremist groups, notably ISIS. This affiliation has led to heightened instability in the region, meriting a collaborative response from Ugandan and Congolese forces. Operation Shujaa exemplifies cross-border military cooperation aimed at combating terrorism and enhancing regional security. The operation reflects ongoing efforts to address the threats posed by the ADF, which is known for its violent insurgencies and abduction of civilians, particularly in Eastern Congo and neighboring areas.

In conclusion, the recent joint military operation has marked a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to counter the ADF and secure innocent lives. By neutralizing key threats and rescuing civilians, the UPDF and FARDC have demonstrated their commitment to regional stability and the protection of communities affected by insurgency. Continued collaboration between these nations is essential to dismantle extremist networks and rehabilitate affected populations.
