Pakistan Appoints Javed as Interim White-Ball Head Coach for Men’s Cricket Team

The PCB has appointed Javed as the interim white-ball head coach for the men’s cricket team, taking over from Jason Gillespie, who focuses on the red-ball side. Javed has substantial coaching experience and will also remain a senior member of the National Selection Committee. The PCB will search for a permanent white-ball head coach by March 2025, with multiple series scheduled in preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former international cricketer Javed as the interim white-ball head coach for the men’s team. He succeeds Jason Gillespie, who is currently in Australia as the head coach of the team’s red-ball format, having taken over after Gary Kirsten’s resignation. Javed has a wealth of coaching experience, having served with Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and previously holding positions with the Sri Lankan national team and as head coach for the UAE. In addition to his interim role, Javed will maintain his involvement as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee and will assume further responsibilities after the conclusion of the ongoing eight-team tournament. The PCB plans to initiate the search for a permanent white-ball head coach, aiming for an appointment by the end of the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for March 2025. The Pakistan men’s cricket team has several white-ball matches lined up ahead of the Champions Trophy, including a three-game ODI and T20I series in Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5, followed by a tour to South Africa from December 10 to 22. Additionally, they will participate in a tri-nation ODI series at home involving South Africa and New Zealand from February 8 to 14.

In response to Gary Kirsten’s resignation, Jason Gillespie was appointed as the head coach of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team. However, his commitment to the red-ball format created a need for an interim replacement for the white-ball format. Javed’s selection reflects the PCB’s intent to maintain continuity in coaching while they assess candidates for a permanent position. Javed’s extensive coaching background positions him well to lead the team in upcoming white-ball competitions, including the ICC Champions Trophy.

The appointment of Javed as the interim white-ball head coach is a strategic move by the PCB to ensure strong leadership for the men’s team in the lead-up to significant international competitions. With several matches planned in the coming months, Javed’s experience will be vital for the team. Moreover, the PCB’s ongoing recruitment process for a permanent head coach highlights their commitment to establishing a robust coaching framework going forward.
