Celebrating 60 Years of Kenya-Italy Diplomatic Relations

Kenya and Italy celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations at the KICC in Nairobi, featuring discussions with Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi and a focus on space collaboration. Ambassador Roberto Natali represented Italy at the event, exploring an exhibition on Luigi Broglio and the Italian Space Agency’s activities in Kenya. Mudavadi expressed hope for future satellite launches from the Malindi Space Centre to enhance aerospace efforts.

Nairobi is currently celebrating six decades of diplomatic relations between Kenya and its early supporters, with Italy being a significant contributor to this commemoration. Represented by Ambassador Roberto Natali, Italy engaged in discussions with the First Cabinet Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, before exploring an exhibition at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC). This exhibition prominently features the contributions of Luigi Broglio, the initiator of the Malindi Space Centre, alongside a showcase of efforts from the Italian Space Agency in collaboration with Kenya’s space agency.

During his visit to the Italian pavilion, the only dedicated display for a European Union nation, Minister Mudavadi reviewed a historic film capturing the last satellite launch from Malindi. He expressed optimism regarding future launches from the centre, underscoring the goal of enhancing aerospace capabilities in Kenya and across Africa through strengthened collaboration with Italy. The recent visit of Adolfo Urso, the Italian Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, further underscored the mutual commitment to advancing space exploration together.

The diplomatic ties between Kenya and Italy date back to Kenya’s independence, making Italy one of the first nations to formally recognize it. This long-standing relationship has fostered collaborative efforts in various sectors, notably in aerospace, where both countries have shared initiatives, including the operations at the Malindi Space Centre. The current exhibition and celebrations highlight not only the historical ties but also the future potential of their partnership in space exploration.

The 60th anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between Kenya and Italy serve as a testament to their enduring partnership. The discussions surrounding aerospace collaborations signal a bright future for joint initiatives in space research and technology, which are vital for Kenya’s aspirations in this field. The events emphasize the importance of continued cooperation in strengthening ties and advancing mutual interests.
