Abdus Salam Chaudhary recalled joining the fight at just 17 and articulated the profound gratitude towards India for their unwavering support during that tumultuous time. “They gave all kinds of support, training, food, everything. That’s how our relations were founded, and they continue,” he stated, underscoring the enduring bond between the two nations.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir noted that the current political climate in Bangladesh is merely a phase, advocating patience for a positive resolution. Indian war veterans, including Wing Commander (Retd.) D. J. Claire, reminisced about their experiences, with Mr. Claire recalling his father’s notable role as the first Indian officer to enter Pakistani General Niazi’s office following the surrender in Dhaka.
Colonel (Retd.) Suresh Kumar Sharma reflected on the harrowing experiences endured during the war and expressed dismay regarding the ongoing socio-political challenges in Bangladesh. The commemorative event included wreath-laying at the War Memorial, military salutes, and a tattoo, amidst speculation about participation due to strained bilateral relations. West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose acknowledged the Indian Armed Forces’ impact on global democracy, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude for India’s role in the Bangladesh freedom movement.
