Iran and Oman Advocate for Unified Syria and Inclusive Governance

Iran and Oman have jointly emphasized the need for Syria’s unity and an inclusive government post the regime change led by HTS. The foreign ministers of both nations discussed broader regional issues and expressed their commitment to maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity, with Oman reaffirming its role as a mediator in diplomatic matters concerning Iran.

On Monday, Iran and Oman reiterated their call for the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and the establishment of an inclusive government following the ousting of Bashar Al Assad’s regime by insurgents, particularly the Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS). Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a meeting with his Omani counterpart Badr Al Busaidi held in Tehran, stressed the importance of acknowledging the diverse ethnicities and religions within Syria.

Mr. Araghchi highlighted their extensive discussions on Syria’s situation, stating that they mutually agreed on the need for a government that represents all facets of Syrian society. Concurrently, Mr. Al Busaidi emphasized that the meeting underscored the importance of maintaining Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The talks also delved into broader regional issues, including the conflict in Gaza and the ongoing crises in Syria and Yemen, as reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency.

Significantly, Iran has faced significant challenges in recent months, evidenced by the fracturing of its „Axis of Resistance” coalition against Israel, with groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah experiencing substantial leadership losses, coinciding with the turbulent political landscape in Syria. Oman’s role as a mediator between Iran and Western powers, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program, was also acknowledged during these discussions.

Mr. Araghchi expressed appreciation for Oman, clarifying that while no specific messages were conveyed during this visit, ongoing communication with the American side would occur at a later time through the Swiss Embassy. Mr. Al Busaidi complimented the historical ties between Iran and Oman, affirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors.

The discussions between Iran and Oman come at a crucial time for Syria, which has experienced prolonged conflict since 2011. The recent territorial gains by opposition forces, including HTS, have raised concerns regarding Syria’s future governance and unity. Iran, a staunch backer of the Assad regime, faces declining influence as its alliances with neighboring militia groups weaken, while Oman plays a vital role as a diplomatic conduit due to its relatively neutral stance in regional disputes.

In summary, the recent meeting between Iranian and Omani officials highlights the shared commitment to preserving Syria’s integrity and fostering an inclusive governance structure amid ongoing regional challenges. As Iran grapples with strategic setbacks within its aligned groups, Oman’s mediating role remains significant in promoting diplomatic engagements and stability in the region.
