Leaders from the Acholi communities in Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan, and Lamwo District, Uganda convened a meeting to prioritize peaceful coexistence across their shared border. David Otim Okot, Chairperson of the Acholi Community in South Sudan, articulated that fostering cooperation between the local security forces was essential. The recent discussions held in Palabek Town have highlighted the need to address tensions caused by border misunderstandings and enhance trade and movement of people between the regions.
Mr. Okot emphasized the historical ties of the Acholi communities, asserting, “We are one people that were divided by artificial colonial boundaries.” The meeting also addressed issues such as cross-border clashes, leading to a call for more collaboration among security forces in both nations to mitigate crime.
Furthermore, they advocated for the South Sudanese Government to rectify infrastructure challenges, such as impassable roads and damaged bridges in Magwi County, to promote trade fluidity. Mr. Okot confirmed plans for a follow-up meeting in February as part of ongoing confidence-building efforts between the two communities. This initiative included various regional dignitaries and was attended by Uganda’s Presidential Advisor on Military Affairs, Gen. Salim Saleh.
