Namibia Backs Raila Odinga in Bid for African Union Commission Chairmanship

Namibia’s President Nangolo Mbumba has endorsed Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission chairmanship. During a visit to Namibia, Odinga discussed his campaign, aiming to secure support from 30 member states while addressing Africa’s unity, trade, and youth empowerment. He faces competition from two other candidates but seeks to realize the vision of Africa’s founding fathers.

President Nangolo Mbumba of Namibia has publicly endorsed former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga in his bid for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC). Odinga, who is currently on a continental tour to gather support, visited President Mbumba to discuss his candidacy. Speaking about his decision to run, Odinga revealed, “I have been requested by some of my friends on the continent that maybe I should offer myself.” President Mbumba affirmed the importance of his candidacy, stating, “Not maybe, we are telling you, you should.”

Although Mbumba expressed support, concerns were raised regarding the official stance of the Namibian government on this matter. Presidential press secretary Alfredo Hengari noted that they would not provide a definitive answer concerning the nation’s support for Odinga. For a successful campaign, Odinga requires backing from 30 member states, facing competition from other candidates, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar.

During his campaign, Odinga articulated his aspirations to align with the vision of Africa’s founding fathers for a united continent, referencing historical speeches made in Addis Ababa in May 1963. He emphasized his focus on enhancing unity, trade, and travel within Africa, criticizing the numerous barriers that hinder movement across borders. Odinga advocated for improved infrastructure, including a high-speed railway system, to connect key economic regions across Africa.

Lastly, Odinga plans to dedicate his efforts to addressing the needs of Africa’s youth, noting that 70% of the continent’s population is under 35 years of age. He emphasized the importance of providing access to the internet and leveraging technology, including artificial intelligence, to foster development rooted in Africa. His vision aims to transform the continent’s socio-economic landscape while empowering its younger generation.

The African Union (AU) plays a significant role in fostering unity and collaboration across the continent. The position of chairperson of the African Union Commission is critical as it influences policy and governance at a continental level. Raila Odinga’s candidacy comes during a time of intense competition, with multiple candidates vying for this prestigious role. His goals touch on infrastructure development, youth engagement, and dismantling travel barriers to facilitate greater connectivity across Africa. Odinga’s emphasis on the vision of unity aligns with the AU’s foundational principles. Moreover, his focus on youth empowerment arises from demographic trends that reveal a predominantly young African population, underscoring the need for policies that cater to their unique challenges and opportunities.

In summary, President Nangolo Mbumba’s endorsement of Raila Odinga reflects a significant step in Odinga’s quest for the AUC chairmanship. As he seeks to gather support from African nations, his overarching goals of uniting the continent, enhancing trade, and addressing youth needs are crucial elements of his platform. The success of his campaign will largely depend on securing the necessary backing from member states while navigating competition from other candidates. Odinga’s vision could reshape Africa’s socio-economic landscape, making it pivotal for the continent’s future.
