UN Peacekeepers Injured in Ongoing Clashes in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Nine UN peacekeepers were injured amidst ongoing clashes in the eastern DRC, particularly around Sake and Goma. MONUSCO has been enhancing patrols with Congolese forces to protect civilians from escalating violence. Over 35,000 individuals have been displaced this year, prompting international concern from UN leaders regarding the humanitarian crisis and regional stability.

The recent clashes in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have led to injuries among UN peacekeepers, with nine reported wounded. According to Farhan Haq, the UN deputy spokesman, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) is actively conducting continuous joint patrols with Congolese armed forces to protect civilian populations amidst ongoing violence for territorial control around Sake.

The withdrawal of MONUSCO from South Kivu in June 2024 has intensified their focus on safeguarding key areas in North Kivu, particularly Goma and Sake. As conflict erupts between the Congolese army and the M23 armed group, a significant number of civilians have been displaced. Since January, over 35,000 individuals fleeing violence in Masisi have sought safety within displacement sites in Goma.

M23 rebels recently claimed the killing of Maj. Gen. Peter Cirimwami, the governor of North Kivu, as they have resumed insurgent activities in Eastern DRC, which is rich in mineral resources. Accusations have arisen against Rwanda for supporting M23, although Rwanda has denied these claims.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concern regarding the resurgence of hostilities in eastern DRC. He emphasized the humanitarian crisis in Goma, where over 700,000 displaced persons currently reside, warning that the escalation of violence could lead to further regional instability. Guterres called for an immediate halt to M23’s offensive and their withdrawal from occupied territories.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has faced ongoing conflict, particularly in the eastern region, where various armed groups, including the M23, have engaged in violent confrontations. The United Nations has maintained a peacekeeping mission intended to stabilize the region and protect civilians, but recent clashes have raised concerns about the effectiveness of these efforts and the humanitarian implications for displaced populations. The conflict’s complexity is further highlighted by allegations of external support for the M23 from neighboring Rwanda, which fosters international tension.

In summary, the recent violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in injuries to UN peacekeepers and significant civilian displacement. The situation remains precarious, with heightened risks of a broader conflict due to ongoing hostilities between the Congolese army and the M23 armed group. The UN Secretary-General has called for immediate action to cease these hostilities and protect vulnerable populations.
