India has sent a 10-tonne medical consignment to Equatorial Guinea, including anti-retroviral drugs and HIV/AIDS diagnostic kits. India has dispatched a substantial medical consignment to Equatorial Guinea, which includes 10 tonnes of anti-retroviral drugs, along with diagnostic kits for the management of HIV/AIDS and medications for symptomatic treatment. This initiative, aiming to bolster the healthcare system of Equatorial Guinea, was confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and took flight from New Delhi on Saturday.
The MEA Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, announced via social media that this aid reflects India’s commitment to assisting its Global South partners. He stated, “A medical consignment carrying 10 tonnes of Anti-Retro Viral drugs, diagnostic kits for management of HIV/AIDS along with medicines for symptomatic treatment & supplements departed today from New Delhi airport for Equatorial Guinea. The humanitarian aid will support the healthcare capacity of Equatorial Guinea.”
Despite demonstrating relative prosperity, Equatorial Guinea grapples with substantial structural challenges that hinder the effective realization of the 2030 Agenda, according to UNICEF. The government has made significant strides, yet obstacles remain in fully implementing developmental goals.
India and Equatorial Guinea have maintained amicable relations since before the latter’s independence in 1968, with diplomatic ties growing stronger over the years. Notably, in October 2015, Equatorial Guinea established its embassy in New Delhi, reciprocated by India opening its embassy in Malabo in March 2019. Man Mohan Bhanot became the first resident Ambassador of India to Equatorial Guinea in September 2019.
In a gesture of solidarity during the COVID-19 pandemic, India provided medicines and medical equipment to Equatorial Guinea in June 2020. India has consistently responded to the needs of its global partners through humanitarian aid, as demonstrated by its earlier assistance to Lesotho, which included 1,000 metric tonnes of sorghum to address food security in January.
