Zambia-Tanzania Interconnector Project to Enhance Energy Access

The Zambia – Tanzania Interconnector Project aims to enhance Zambia’s access to affordable and sustainable energy, contributing to economic growth and job creation. Backed by a $292 million investment from the World Bank and partners, the project seeks to improve electricity trade, diversify energy sources, and provide universal access, all while strengthening Zambia’s power transmission system.

A new initiative, the Zambia – Tanzania Interconnector Project (ZTIP), is set to enhance Zambia’s access to sustainable and affordable energy, fostering economic growth and job creation. Backed by the World Bank, this project will improve electricity trade across the Southern Africa region, benefiting current and potential electricity users in Zambia while enhancing rural energy access, education, and healthcare services.

With a total investment of $292 million, ZTIP aligns with regional efforts to ensure the sustainability of the energy sector and provide universal electricity access. The financial backing includes $245 million from the International Development Association (IDA), complemented by contributions from the UK and EU.

Achim Fock, World Bank Country Manager for Zambia, highlighted the financial struggles in Zambia’s power sector, emphasizing the project’s role in increasing power transmission capacity while connecting Southern and Eastern Africa.

The ZTIP is a component of the World Bank’s RETRADE-SA MPA, aimed at boosting power trade and enhancing resilience within the Southern African Power Pool. This project seeks to create the largest geographical energy market globally, linking Cape Town to Cairo.

As Zambia predominantly relies on hydropower, ZTIP will diversify electricity sources, thereby mitigating ZESCO’s vulnerability during droughts. The introduction of a 330-kilovolt transmission line will enhance the local grid, facilitating new renewable energy generation and expanding electrical access.

The Zambia – Tanzania Interconnector Project is pivotal for enhancing energy access in Zambia, particularly in light of challenges faced by the country’s power sector. By expanding electricity transmission capabilities, ZTIP aims to improve reliability and affordability of energy resources for consumers, which is essential for economic growth. This initiative forms part of broader efforts in Southern Africa to integrate energy markets and ensure resilience against climate change, promoting sustainability in energy infrastructure.

The Zambia – Tanzania Interconnector Project represents a significant advancement in energy access for Zambia, supported by a substantial commitment from the World Bank and other international partners. As this project unfolds, it is poised to transform regional energy trade, lower costs, and improve the overall sustainability of Zambia’s energy supply, ultimately contributing to economic development and resilience.
