Tennessee Urges Residents to Prepare for Earthquake Risks

TEMA emphasizes the importance of earthquake preparedness for Tennessee residents, highlighting the state’s location on two seismic zones. The agency advises securing furniture, improving structural integrity, and obtaining earthquake insurance to mitigate risks from potential seismic events.

In recognition of Earthquake Awareness Month, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) is urging all residents, particularly newcomers, to prepare for potential seismic activity. Tennessee is situated on two significant seismic zones: the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) in the west and the East Tennessee Seismic Zone (ETSZ) in the east. While earthquakes are infrequent, their potential impact warrants attention and preparation.

Tennessee’s geological location places it at risk for earthquakes due to its position across two seismic zones. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is prominent and recognized, while the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, stretching into southwest Virginia, is also noted for its active smaller earthquakes. According to TEMA’s 2018 Hazard Mitigation report, earthquakes measuring 5.5 or higher pose a considerable threat to the state.

It is evident that Tennessee residents must maintain vigilance regarding earthquake preparedness due to their geographical settings. TEMA strongly recommends securing heavy household items, addressing structural vulnerabilities, and considering earthquake insurance for those residing within the seismic zones, especially amid potential risks associated with larger earthquakes.
