The EU has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting South Sudan’s transition to democracy, advocating for elections scheduled for December 2026. EU Deputy Head of Delegation Lothar Jaschke highlighted the necessity of a strong civil society and the empowerment of the National Electoral Commission in this process. He underscored the importance of public participation in governance and continuous international support for meaningful progress in the electoral framework.
The European Union (EU) has expressed its commitment to support South Sudan’s transition towards a stable and democratic society. During the launch of the policy brief titled “How to hold elections,” EU Deputy Head of Delegation, Lothar Jaschke, emphasized the importance of upcoming elections, highlighting the need for a strong civil society. He stated that with appropriate political decisions, it is feasible to conduct inclusive and transparent elections by December 2026, provided the National Electoral Commission is empowered to establish election timelines.
Mr. Jaschke elaborated on the significance of elections, stating that they enhance public participation in governance and foster accountability in elected officials. He conveyed regret over the absence of a strategic plan from the South Sudanese government regarding the transitional period, underscoring the necessity to vocalize concerns leading up to the elections to prevent repeating past mistakes.
He stressed that a conducive political and civic environment is essential for democracy, comparing its necessity to fundamental resources such as water and oxygen. The EU representative noted that progress in the electoral process could garner international support, while stagnation could diminish optimism regarding political will in South Sudan.
Mr. Jaschke reminded attendees that the EU has been a leading donor for creating an enabling environment for elections in South Sudan, emphasizing that elections should aim to establish a peaceful and stable democracy, marking the end of the transitional period. He reiterated the EU’s unwavering support for the peace process initiated with the first peace agreement in 2015 and its backing for the ongoing Tumaini talks to promote a more inclusive peace framework.
In recent years, South Sudan has faced significant political instability and conflict, following its independence in 2011. The EU has recognized the importance of transitioning towards a democratic governance structure to ensure peace and stability in the region. The call for elections is a crucial step in facilitating this transition, allowing citizens to engage in governance and hold officials accountable. With earlier agreements being either stagnant or not fully realized, the EU aims to support the South Sudanese electoral process as a means to reinforce legitimacy and democratic practices.
The European Union’s advocacy for elections in South Sudan emphasizes the paramount need for a structured approach to governance during the transitional phase. By promoting a strong civil society and ensuring the empowerment of electoral bodies, the EU seeks to foster an environment conducive to public participation and accountability. The commitment to peace and stability remains central, showcasing the vital role of elections in the democratic journey of South Sudan.
