The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has appealed for a humanitarian pause in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, coinciding with the upcoming month of Ramadan. This request was made during discussions among leaders in Ethiopia, aimed at facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the war.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in violent clashes between the Regular Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to extensive casualties and displacement, with over 12 million individuals uprooted from their homes.
Amid accusations from the United Nations and other entities regarding the UAE’s support for the RSF, the UAE previously committed to the United States that it would refrain from arming these forces. However, recent statements from U.S. lawmakers indicate concerns that the UAE has not upheld this pledge.
“This war has really gone on for too long, cost too many lives and brought about immense suffering,” stated Reem al-Hashimy, UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation. She emphasized the urgent need for a humanitarian pause to enable aid delivery.
The UAE plans to provide an additional $200 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as women and children. Meanwhile, other nations have also been implicated in their support of different factions within the conflict.
The Sudanese army has territorial control over northern and eastern regions, while the RSF dominates much of Darfur. The United Nations recently accused the RSF of obstruction in aid distribution.
The African Union has characterized the conflict as the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world”, highlighting the dire circumstances faced by children, with many receiving treatment for malnutrition in the previous year.
The UAE’s call for a humanitarian pause in the Sudan conflict during Ramadan highlights the urgent need for assistance amid overwhelming suffering.
