China’s Foreign Ministry Highlights Women’s Empowerment and International Affairs

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian announced Minister Han Jun’s visit to Uruguay for President Orsi’s inauguration. China commemorated the Beijing Declaration anniversary at the UN, with astronaut Liu Yang emphasizing women’s empowerment. Lin Jian addressed international issues including U.S. tariffs on copper and military support to Taiwan, reaffirming China’s commitment to its sovereignty.

On February 26, 2025, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian announced that Minister Han Jun, President Xi Jinping’s special envoy, would visit Montevideo, Uruguay, to attend the inauguration of President Yamandú Orsi on March 1. This visit follows an invitation from President Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay.

During the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, a panel discussion commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration was held. Chinese astronaut Liu Yang represented women globally and delivered a keynote speech via video link, emphasizing China’s commitment to women’s empowerment and high-quality development.

Liu Yang shared her personal connection to the Beijing Declaration, stating that her experiences highlight the power of women in technology. She remarked, “When the engine of the Shenzhou spacecraft was ignited, I felt not only the shock of 600 tonnes of thrust, but also the power of hundreds of millions of Chinese women backing it up.”

Regarding international affairs, Lin Jian acknowledged reports of Ukraine’s agreement with the U.S. on resource development but refrained from commenting further. Additionally, he addressed U.S. investigations into tariffs on copper imports, emphasizing China’s opposition to unilateral tariff increases and advocating for dialogue to address mutual concerns.

When asked about military assistance to Taiwan, Lin voiced China’s concerns, stating that such actions violate the one-China principle and disturb regional stability. He urged the U.S. to refrain from supporting Taiwan’s military capabilities. Lin concluded by reiterating that China would continue to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In summary, this press conference highlighted China’s active role in international discussions surrounding women’s empowerment, its position on Taiwan’s military relations with the U.S., and its commitment to cooperative ties with other nations. Lin Jian’s remarks underscore China’s dedication to the principles outlined in the Beijing Declaration and a stance against unilateral foreign interventions.
