Migori County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu has announced that local security agencies will collaborate with their Tanzanian counterparts to combat counterfeit products and illegal goods along the porous border. He emphasized that the unaccounted entry of these goods into the country is a significant loss of revenue for the nation. “We have been losing a lot of revenue as a country from individuals who use ‘panya routes’ instead of designated border points of Isebania and Muhuru Bay,” Mr. Kisilu stated.
During a recent meeting, Mr. Kisilu urged residents of Migori County, particularly those living near the border, to exhibit patriotism by assisting the joint security team in safeguarding the nation. He remarked, “We need to be alert to protect our country, and we should not take part in assisting foreigners to cross over with illegal goods that are not accounted for by our KRA officers.” The cooperation with authorities in Tarime, Tanzania, has been highlighted as a priority to enhance border security.
Mr. Kisilu revealed that the ongoing crackdown has yielded significant results, including the seizure of 200 kilograms of sodium cyanide and 400 kilograms of explosives, which pose risks to public safety.
