Mozambique: INAM Forecasts Tropical Storms Honde and Garance Formation

INAM has predicted the formation of Tropical Storms Honde and Garance near Madagascar, with Honde likely to develop into a tropical cyclone, affecting Mozambique with strong winds and rain, while Garance poses no threat. The institute advises caution regarding maritime navigation.

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) of Mozambique has forecasted the development of two tropical storms, named ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, expected to form between Thursday and Friday in the south and east of Madagascar. These systems are projected to generate strong winds in the Mozambique Channel, impacting weather conditions in Mozambique.

Currently, Tropical Storm Honde is situated approximately 250 kilometers from Inhambane province, progressing southward near Madagascar. It is anticipated to strengthen into a tropical cyclone on Friday, potentially resulting in strong winds in the channel and varying degrees of rainfall across parts of the country.

Meteorologist Lelo Tayob emphasized that while this system is currently not affecting land, its size could influence the general atmospheric circulation, leading to rainfall in Mozambique. “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain.”

Tropical Storm Garance is also advancing eastward, with a possibility of evolving into a tropical cyclone. However, according to Tayob, it poses no threat to Mozambique as it continues its trajectory away from the continent. “Given its size, location, and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country.”

INAM advises residents and maritime operators to remain vigilant and implement safety measures during these weather phenomena, particularly regarding maritime navigation, acknowledging potential impacts from both storms as they progress in the region.

In summary, INAM has alerted that Tropical Storms Honde and Garance are developing in the vicinity of Madagascar, with Honde expected to strengthen into a cyclone, posing risks of strong winds and rainfall in Mozambique. Garance, moving eastward, does not threaten the country. Residents are urged to take precautions, particularly in maritime activities, as these storms evolve.
