A delegation from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) of Tanzania arrived in Namibia to pay respects to the late Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the founding president of Namibia and respected national leader. This significant tribute commenced on February 27, 2025, leading up to the official state funeral scheduled for March 1, 2025.
Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, the Secretary-General of CCM, is heading the delegation, which includes Comrade Rabia Abdalla Hamid, the Secretary for Politics and International Relations within the CCM National Executive Committee. They landed in Namibia on February 26, 2025, receiving a warm welcome from Tanzania’s Ambassador to Namibia, Mr. Caesar Waitara.
The CCM representatives will engage in a series of commemorative activities organized by SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party and a close ally of CCM. A national memorial service is planned for February 28, 2025, wherein Dr. Nchimbi is expected to participate before attending the state funeral at Heroes’ Acre cemetery in Windhoek.
The historical ties between Tanzania and Namibia run deep, with SWAPO and CCM forming a strong alliance during the liberation struggle against colonial rule and apartheid. Notably, during the 1960s, Dr. Nujoma and several SWAPO leaders found sanctuary in Tanzania, advancing their cause for Namibia’s independence, culminating in Namibia’s liberation in 1990.
Dr. Sam Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, 2025, will always be remembered as the Founding Father of the Namibian Nation, a title formally bestowed upon him by an act of parliament in 2005. His legacy as an activist and leader paved the way for a new era in Namibia.
In summary, the CCM delegation’s visit represents the enduring friendship between Tanzania and Namibia, honoring the legacy of Dr. Sam Nujoma. The planned events demonstrate mutual respect and recognition for Dr. Nujoma’s pivotal role in Namibia’s struggle for independence, reflecting the shared historical journey of both nations.
