In response to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, Türkiye has facilitated the relocation of El-Butana University students and academics to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. This initiative is coordinated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) through the newly launched “Guest University Initiative” to maintain educational continuity for Sudanese students. Other Sudanese institutions, such as Bahri and El-Neelain Universities, will also receive support at Selçuk University and Inönü University, respectively.
YÖK President Erol Özvar noted that this initiative would enhance bilateral relations and set an example for the Islamic world, underlining the existing presence of Sudanese students in the Turkish universities which promote a collaborative academic atmosphere. He remarked, “Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University’s Sudanese students are now welcoming fellow academics and peers, continuing Türkiye’s tradition as a hub for education and research.”
The conflict in Sudan has resulted in significant humanitarian crises, disrupting education dramatically due to the war between the army and Rapid Support Forces. Reports indicate over 20,000 deaths and 25 million individuals in need of humanitarian aid. As a result, the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education sought assistance from YÖK to support affected students.
Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud from El-Butana University conveyed appreciation for Türkiye’s swift response, stating, “When we explained our situation, Türkiye was the first country to hear our plea, and we are incredibly thankful for their support.” He acknowledged the considerable disparities in educational resources and vowed to leverage the knowledge gained in Türkiye to enhance the educational framework in Sudan.
Sudanese student Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla is currently pursuing a master’s degree in biochemistry, noting the benefits of practical training in advanced research facilities. He expressed determination to apply his learning towards contributing to Sudan’s development. Similarly, Rashida Ebrahim Hussein, an undergraduate in veterinary medicine, expressed enthusiasm for utilizing advanced equipment in her studies, stating that her experience in Türkiye marked a new beginning for her academic journey.
