SRK partner and principal civil engineer Andrew Robertshaw emphasized the project’s advancements in technology, noting that it spans approximately 1 km by 1.3 km with a significant storage capacity designed to manage a production rate of 466,000 tonnes per month over 20 years.

The TSF-4 adheres to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), necessitating design considerations for high talc levels in the tailings, which can disrupt drainage systems. SRK corporate consultant Robert McNeil described the sophisticated design required for the drainage system to manage the unique challenges presented by talc, stating, “It was important for us to remove the water in the tailings as quickly as possible.” A series of conduits facilitate this drainage, ensuring effective water management during the tailings deposition process, crucial for proper operations.

The TSF features an intricate drainage network, allowing monitoring of water dissipation at various locations. The internal paddocks are strategically designed to promote the settlement of coarser tailings and create a well-drained outer shell, which is essential in eliminating the risk of clogging at the main drains.

Incorporating best practices, the TSF boasts clay and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) linings to manage the geochemical properties of the site effectively. These unique features enhance durability while addressing the challenges posed by talc and ensure the long-term reliability of the facility.
