A delegation from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative visited Nigeria to reinforce efforts against the type 2 variant poliovirus. They engaged with government and traditional leaders to address issues such as vaccine misinformation and insecurity. The discussions highlighted the need for stronger political leadership and enhanced routine immunization to end polio transmission effectively.
A high-level delegation from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) recently visited Abuja, Nigeria, on February 27-28, 2025, as part of efforts to eradicate type 2 variant poliovirus. The delegation engaged with government officials and traditional leaders, renewing commitments to address persistent challenges in the fight against polio, including insecurity and misinformation surrounding vaccines.
The Polio Oversight Board (POB), the decision-making body of GPEI, was led by Dr. Chris Elias. The group stressed the need for enhanced national leadership in the fight against polio by conducting discussions with Nigerian government leaders and the Sultan of Sokoto, underscoring the importance of substantial local involvement and ownership.
Meetings held in Abuja included discussions with Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, who reiterated the necessity for nationwide dedication to eradicate polio. The delegation also conferred with the Mai Bade, representing the Sultan of Sokoto, who confirmed Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening routine immunization efforts.
The delegation evaluated the current status of the virus in meetings with Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and leaders from the National Emergency Operations Center. Recommendations from the 42nd Expert Review Committee focused on enhancing political engagement, accountability, surveillance, and campaign efficiency to further immunization efforts.
Despite significant vaccination efforts in 2023-2024, polio transmission levels remained unchanged, with 94 confirmed polio cases in 15 states as of mid-February 2025. The POB delegation emphasized that renewed engagement from all stakeholders is essential to halt the spread of type 2 variant poliovirus in Nigeria and surrounding regions.
The group collectively acknowledged that rapid improvements could be achieved through strategic coordination between state and federal ministries. Nigerian leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing response efforts to polio outbreaks while also ensuring robust routine immunization to safeguard children from polio.
The visit by the high-level GPEI delegation to Nigeria signifies a critical step toward reinforcing commitments against type 2 variant poliovirus. By fostering strong political leadership and enhancing immunization strategies, the Nigerian government aims to overcome challenges in eradicating polio. The ongoing collaboration between stakeholders is paramount to achieving success and ensuring protection for future generations.
