Lebanese Parliament Confirms Confidence in New Government Led by Nawaf Salam

The Lebanese Parliament has voted in favor of a new government led by Nawaf Salam, receiving broad support despite complex political dynamics. U.S. officials have expressed approval, emphasizing the importance of economic reforms and security collaboration. Salam’s history of strong anti-Israel rhetoric and Hezbollah’s involvement in parliamentary support reflect ongoing regional tensions.

The Lebanese Parliament has officially extended its confidence to the newly formed government, endorsing it with a vote of 95 in favor out of 128 members. The administration is led by Nawaf Salam, who was appointed in mid-January and previously served as the president of the International Court of Justice. Notably, Salam has emphasized that only Lebanon’s armed forces should handle national defense, despite receiving support from Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc for his cabinet selections.

Tammy Bruce, spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department, extended congratulations to both Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and President Joseph Aoun. She highlighted the prolonged struggle of the Lebanese people for a governing body capable of uniting the nation and reinstating state institutions. Bruce affirmed America’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s new government in implementing essential economic reforms while also backing the Lebanese Armed Forces in maintaining peace.

During his tenure at the United Nations, Salam notably condemned Israel in 210 instances over 11 years and has made strong accusations against its government, characterizing its actions as ethnic cleansing and terrorism. His remarks have referred to Israel as an apartheid state on multiple occasions. Additionally, a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, established on November 27, has faced repeated violations by the latter.

The establishment of Nawaf Salam’s government represents a pivotal moment for Lebanon, as it seeks to address longstanding issues and enact crucial reforms. The backing from key international figures and the support from Hezbollah highlight a complex political landscape. Moreover, Salam’s controversial history regarding Israel underscores ongoing tensions within the region, particularly concerning defense and national sovereignty.
