Spanish Company Collaborates with Kazakhstan on Groundwater Exploration

A Spanish company, Xcalibur Smart Mapping, will assist Kazakhstan in exploring groundwater in western Kazakhstan, following negotiations led by Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov. An airborne electromagnetic survey is scheduled for this year to identify groundwater reserves. Discussions for potential financial support from the Spanish government are ongoing.

A Spanish group of specialists is preparing to assist Kazakhstan in the exploration of groundwater resources in the western region of the country. This initiative follows successful negotiations led by Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, with Xcalibur Smart Mapping, a Madrid-based firm renowned for its expertise in airborne and geophysical mapping.

The two parties plan to conduct an airborne electromagnetic survey this year to create detailed maps and identify groundwater reserves in western Kazakhstan, as communicated via the agency’s Telegram account. Additionally, Minister Nurzhigitov is pursuing a grant from the Spanish government to support this project, although discussions are still ongoing.

Minister Nurzhigitov stated, “Experts from both sides are working on this issue. A detailed airborne electromagnetic survey will assist in detecting groundwater reserves and their boundaries.” This project is also linked to previous agreements made in early February, wherein Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have coordinated water supply arrangements, leading Uzbekistan to increase its annual water supply to Kazakhstan to 16 billion cubic meters (bcm).

The collaboration between Kazakhstan and Spain represents a significant step toward enhancing water resource management in western Kazakhstan. The planned airborne electromagnetic survey will provide crucial data to identify and manage groundwater reserves effectively. Ongoing discussions regarding funding from Spain further demonstrate the commitment to this essential project, as well as the cooperative efforts with Uzbekistan concerning water supply needs.
