Egyptian FM Engages with Eritrean President to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

On Friday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Asmara to convey a verbal message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. The discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing various regional issues of mutual interest.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that this meeting followed President El-Sisi’s visit to Eritrea in October 2024. The agenda included advancing a tripartite coordination mechanism involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, with plans for their second ministerial meeting to be held soon.

The conversation reviewed the current Egypt-Eritrea relationship and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation. The parties discussed shared regional concerns, particularly in Africa, and strategies to foster peace and security in the Horn of Africa, with an emphasis on supporting Somalia against terrorism.

Additionally, the talks encompassed developments in Sudan and the importance of upholding Sudan’s unity and supporting its national institutions. The situation in Libya, as well as developments in the Sahel region and the Red Sea, were also key topics, emphasizing Egypt’s position against external interference in the Red Sea’s governance and security.
