Guyanese President Reports Venezuelan Vessel Incursion into Territorial Waters

Guyanese President Irfaan Ali reported that a Venezuelan patrol entered Guyana’s waters, approaching an offshore vessel in a disputed oil block. This incident has prompted Guyana to summon the Venezuelan ambassador, lodge a formal complaint, and notify the ICJ. The OAS and the US have condemned the action, asserting violations of Guyana’s territorial integrity.

On Saturday, Guyanese President Irfaan Ali reported that a Venezuelan coast guard vessel had entered Guyana’s waters, approaching an operational vessel in an offshore oil block. This incident has escalated tensions between the two countries, which are embroiled in a longstanding dispute over the 160,000-square-kilometer Esequibo region. This area is currently under investigation by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The President noted that during the incursion, the Venezuelan vessel came close to multiple assets within Guyana’s exclusive waters, notably the FPSO Prosperity. As a response, Guyana summoned the Venezuelan ambassador for discussions with its foreign minister to voice strong objections, and the embassy in Caracas has been directed to file a formal complaint.

Guyana plans to formally report this incident to the ICJ and collaborate with international partners such as CARICOM. Additionally, President Ali indicated that the Guyanese government has deployed unspecified aerial assets to monitor the situation. Moreover, the Organization of American States (OAS) condemned the Venezuelan action, asserting it violated Guyana’s internationally recognized maritime territory.

The United States Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs also denounced the incursion, stating, “Further provocation will result in consequences for the Maduro regime.” The international community is observing the developments closely, as this situation may impact regional stability and diplomatic relations between the countries involved.

In summary, the recent incursion by a Venezuelan coast guard vessel into Guyana’s waters has intensified the ongoing territorial dispute between the two nations. Guyana’s strong diplomatic response, including formal complaints and international engagement, highlights its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty. The situation remains sensitive, and any further actions could have significant diplomatic repercussions, drawing international attention and condemnation.
