Egypt has rejected attempts to create a parallel government in Sudan, stressing the importance of national unity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for the prioritization of Sudan’s interests and an inclusive political process. This rejection comes amidst ongoing violence between the Sudanese army and the RSF, resulting in a significant humanitarian crisis.
Egypt has officially rejected any initiatives to establish a parallel government in Sudan, emphasizing the significance of Sudan’s unity and sovereignty. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement urging against actions that compromise the territorial integrity of Sudan, asserting that these attempts would exacerbate the ongoing humanitarian crisis and obstruct the efforts to align the Sudanese political factions’ visions.
In tandem with these developments, Egypt has called upon all Sudanese factions to prioritize national interests and partake constructively in an inclusive political dialogue, excluding any external interference. This comes in the context of a political charter signed in February by the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and various political groups in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at opposing the existing Sudanese authority.
In response, the Sudanese government condemned Kenya’s role as a host for what it termed a conspiracy to facilitate a government for the RSF. Moreover, Sudan recalled its ambassador to Kenya in protest against the discussions held there regarding a parallel governance framework. Kenya defended its involvement, positioning it as a strategic effort to mediate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in alignment with the United Nations and African Union.
While this political tension plays out, the Sudanese army has made considerable headway against the RSF across various regions, notably Khartoum, where it has gained control of 90% of Bahri and significant portions of Omdurman and Khartoum city. The RSF, however, continues to dominate specific neighborhoods within the eastern and southern districts of Khartoum.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, ongoing since mid-April 2023, has led to over 20,000 fatalities and displaced 14 million individuals, according to estimates from the UN and local authorities. Notably, research from several US universities suggests the death toll may be as high as 130,000.
Egypt resolutely opposes the formation of a parallel government in Sudan, emphasizing the need for preserving the nation’s unity and sovereignty. The call for Sudanese factions to engage in an inclusive political process reflects Egypt’s initiative to foster stability. Concurrently, the Sudanese army’s operational advances highlight the ongoing conflict’s intensity and escalating humanitarian impacts.
