Enhanced Drainage Capacity for East Bank Demerara with Mini Excavators

The Ministry of Agriculture has delivered six mini excavators to six Neighborhood Democratic Councils in East Bank Demerara to boost drainage capacity. This initiative, valued at $96 million, aims to enhance local infrastructure and assist with the maintenance of drainage systems, reflecting the government’s commitment to empowering local councils.

Residents of Mocha/Arcadia and surrounding areas along the East Bank of Demerara are set to benefit from improved drainage capabilities. Recently, six mini excavators, valued at approximately $96 million, were delivered to six Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to enhance local drainage systems. This initiative aims to address the community’s drainage needs effectively.

On Friday, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha presented the mini excavators to the respective chairpersons and officials from the Eccles/Ramsburg, Mocha/Arcadia, Little Diamond/Herstelling, Soesdyke/T’Huis te/Coverden, and Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra NDCs. He was accompanied by Minister of Local Government Sonia Parag during the event, highlighting the government’s commitment to local infrastructure improvements.

Minister Mustapha emphasized that this provision of excavation equipment aligns with directives from President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo. They recognized the crucial role of NDCs and directed that all such councils across Guyana be equipped with mini excavators to facilitate the maintenance of drainage channels.

The provision of six mini excavators to East Bank Demerara’s NDCs marks a significant investment in local infrastructure aimed at improving drainage systems. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering local councils and enhancing community resilience to flooding.
