Khalifa Haftar released Nigerien opposition leader Mahamadou Saleh after his arrest in Libya, following pressure from French President Emmanuel Macron. Saleh, possessing critical intelligence regarding Niger’s military junta, was influenced by Tuareg leader Rissa Ag Boula. His release could alter regional dynamics and intensify instability within Niger’s military leadership amid ongoing international scrutiny.
Khalifa Haftar has liberated Nigerien opposition leader Mahamadou Saleh shortly after his arrest in southern Libya, reportedly influenced by diplomatic efforts from French President Emmanuel Macron. Italian news agency Nova reported that Rissa Ag Boula, a notable Tuareg leader with substantial influence in the Sahel, played a key role in securing Saleh’s release.
Mahamadou Saleh, who commanded an armed faction in Qatrun, has vital intelligence regarding opposition movements against the military junta in Niger, which is supported by Russian interests. Sources from Libya indicate that during a meeting in Paris on February 26, Macron advised Haftar against extraditing Saleh to Niger’s ruling military council.
The junta in Niger has been facing international isolation since the coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. Nova further suggested that Saleh’s release might alter the balance of power in the region, potentially revitalizing Niger’s opposition and increasing instability within the current military leadership, which is under significant global scrutiny.
Saleh’s arrest coincided with violent clashes in Qatrun involving forces loyal to Haftar’s son, Saddam Haftar, and those loyal to Hassan Al-Zadama. These confrontations reportedly escalated when Al-Zadama’s group resisted disarming, leading to destruction and disruption of vital trade routes among Libya, Niger, and Chad.
The release of Mahamadou Saleh, spurred by diplomatic intervention from President Macron, may significantly impact Niger’s political landscape. As tensions persist within Niger’s military leadership and opposition groups gather strength, the ongoing instability in the region warrants close observation. Saleh’s intelligence on opposition activities will likely play a crucial role in shaping future developments in Niger and beyond.
