Iran’s Parliament Issues No-Confidence Vote Against Economy Minister Hemmati

Iran’s Parliament has dismissed Minister of Economic Affairs Abdolnaser Hemmati through a no-confidence vote, following concerns over his management of the economy and the national currency’s devaluation. The decision received overwhelming support from lawmakers, while President Masoud Pezeshkian defended Hemmati, emphasizing that individual replacements would not bring about substantial improvement.

The Iranian Parliament has passed a vote of no confidence against the country’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, Abdolnaser Hemmati. Jabbar Kouchakinejad, a representative from the Rasht constituency, stated that Hemmati was dismissed after failing to secure the Parliament’s confidence, receiving 182 votes for dismissal, 89 against, one abstention, and one invalid vote out of 273 cast. This decision was influenced by concerns over the national currency’s devaluation.

The recent no-confidence vote against Minister Abdolnaser Hemmati underscores ongoing discontent within the Iranian Parliament regarding economic management. With the president’s defense emphasizing the need for systemic change rather than mere personnel adjustments, questions about the future of Iran’s economy remain critical. The impeachment highlights the critical ability of lawmakers to hold ministers accountable under the Iranian Constitution.
