Alhaji Asoma Abu Banda was a prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and patriot, born in June 1933 in Kintampo within the Brong Ahafo Region. He completed his foundational education at Kintampo and Kumasi Government Boys before obtaining both Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates along with a diploma in Marketing/Sales Management in London.

Initiated into his family’s business from a young age, Alhaji Banda worked alongside his father in road transport, displaying early entrepreneurial qualities. Between 1955 and 1957, he undertook the laborious task of purchasing cattle from Mali, Niger, and Upper Volta, demonstrating remarkable dedication. Yearning for broader knowledge, he pursued further education in London in 1960 and later served as a Director at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) focusing on Africa and the Middle East.

In 1975, Alhaji Banda co-founded a shipping enterprise, OT Africa Line, and the Antrak Group of Companies. His strategic leadership led to the establishment of over 146 branches worldwide, creating employment for over 500,000 individuals. He also became the Chairman of Antrak Air, advancing Ghana’s aviation sector by making it the first wholly Ghanaian-owned airline.

Alhaji Banda significantly contributed to Ghana’s socio-economic landscape, financing vital projects such as the maternity wing of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in 1999, costing nearly one billion Cedis. He invested $10 million towards the establishment of the Tema Container Terminal, yielding approximately 100 new jobs, and founded a Crime Prevention Foundation to bolster the security forces in Ghana.

Every year, Alhaji Banda provided employment for over 3,000 individuals and, as a devout Muslim, constructed a mosque at Airport Residential Area, incurring costs exceeding one million dollars. His profound contributions earned him numerous accolades, including being the first Ghanaian to own an aircraft and the first African to own a ship. He was awarded the Companion of the Order of Volta and recognized for lifetime achievement by the Ghana Shippers Council.

Alhaji Banda’s influence extended into politics where he, alongside other members, founded the People’s Convention Party (PCP). He played a pivotal role in forming the Great Alliance, which later merged with the New Patriotic Party during the 1996 elections. Moreover, he served on various prestigious boards, including the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority and as Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba.

Recent reports have confirmed the passing of Alhaji Asoma Banda, with condolences shared by Dele Momodu, a Nigerian publisher reportedly connected to Banda’s family, who has expressed his sympathy to the bereaved family.
