China Signals Commitment to Climate Cooperation and Criticizes US Trade Policies

China has reaffirmed its commitment to global climate cooperation while opposing US trade tariffs. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted China’s leadership in the IPCC and emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual respect in addressing trade concerns. He also addressed geopolitical issues, including the Ukraine conflict and Taiwan, reiterating China’s sovereignty and role in promoting peace.

China has reaffirmed its commitment to international climate cooperation during a press briefing led by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian. He emphasized China’s role in hosting the recent plenary session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which resulted in the adoption of the seventh assessment report. Lin stated that China aims to build an equitable global climate governance system that supports developing nations in technology and capacity building to combat climate change.

In addition to its climate commitments, Lin voiced strong opposition to proposed US tariffs on Chinese exports, which have been justified by the US amid concerns over fentanyl. He expressed that “China firmly opposes the US’s threat to impose additional tariffs on Chinese products exported to the US” and stated that the country will take necessary measures to protect its interests. Lin pointed out that trade conflicts yield no victors and emphasized China’s willingness to engage in dialogue based on equality and mutual respect to address trade concerns.

On geopolitical issues, Lin reiterated China’s position regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, committing to a constructive role in seeking a political settlement. He expressed support for peaceful resolutions and stated that China hopes for a sustainable solution that considers the concerns of all parties involved. Furthermore, concerning Taiwan, Lin confirmed that “there is only one China in the world,” asserting Taiwan’s status as a part of China and criticizing the US for its interpretations of the one-China principle.

Additionally, Lin urged the United States to relinquish its “hegemonic logic,” which he believes undermines other countries by viewing them merely as instruments for its own interests. Despite tensions, he reiterated China’s dedication to maintaining cooperation, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in its relations with the US, while vowing to uphold China’s national sovereignty.

In summary, China has reinforced its commitment to climate action and criticized US trade policies, particularly the threats of increased tariffs. The country is prepared to defend its interests and engage in respectful dialogue to resolve disputes. Furthermore, China aims to play a constructive role in global geopolitics while maintaining its stance on sovereignty issues related to Taiwan and advocating for peace in regional conflicts, such as the one in Ukraine.
