On Monday, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to promoting respect for human rights during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which extends until April 4. Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, emphasized the nation’s proactive stance by collaborating with Argentina, France, and Samoa on the Convention against Enforced Disappearances.
Morocco has proposed two significant national commitments: organizing a regional symposium in Morocco to encourage the Convention’s ratification and modifying local criminal law to classify enforced disappearance as an independent crime against humanity. Additionally, Morocco, alongside Paraguay and Portugal, has advanced the initiative to establish the International Network of National Mechanisms for Human Rights by organizing pivotal events such as the 10th Glion Dialogue on Human Rights.
The Marrakech Policy Framework emerged from this dialogue, aiming to cultivate effective national mechanisms. Furthermore, Morocco is working to institutionalize the recognition of International Women’s Day in Diplomacy at the Geneva session, reinforcing its dedication to women’s rights in the context of human rights discussions.
Ambassador Zniber highlighted ongoing legal enhancements within Morocco, including the revision of the Family Code, aimed at blending national identity with social evolution and international human rights standards. Actively engaging in transforming legal frameworks, the drafts of the Penal Code and criminal procedure laws are under thoughtful review among stakeholders, including government officials and parliamentarians.
In addition to these reforms, Morocco has adopted an organic law on strike rights and implemented alternative sentencing laws, required to align with contemporary penal policy imperatives.
