President Javier Milei to Undertake Significant Diplomatic Visit to Israel

President Javier Milei will visit Israel at the end of March 2024 to negotiate a security and defense memorandum. This marks his second trip since taking office, following a previous visit in February. The discussions may include meetings with Prime Minister Netanyahu and a focus on cooperation against terrorism. Milei also announced new national security laws in response to threats against Argentina.

President Javier Milei is scheduled to visit Israel at the end of March 2024 to discuss security and defense collaboration through a proposed memorandum. Departing Buenos Aires on March 23, the visit is confirmed by Argentina’s Ambassador to Israel, Rabbi Axel Wahnish, marking Milei’s second trip to the country since assuming office in December 2023.

Milei previously visited Israel in February 2024, which included a significant meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a poignant visit to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. He will be accompanied by his sister, Karina Milei, who is also his Chief-of-Staff, and Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein.

This trip is expected to include another meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, with Milei anticipated to address the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament. The collaboration aims to enhance cooperation in areas such as innovation, technology, defense, and counter-terrorism.

In a recent address to Congress marking the opening of the session, Milei detailed his administration’s commitment to combating terrorism and announced ongoing efforts to develop a national security law. This law will equip the Argentine state and intelligence services with the necessary tools to protect its citizens against threats.

Milei also declared two days of mourning last week for Israeli-Argentine children Ariel and Kfir Bibas, who were taken hostage by Hamas militants. Following this, Netanyahu expressed gratitude for Milei’s steadfast leadership, asserting that such actions should inspire other global leaders.

In his first year in office, Milei pledged to relocate Argentina’s Embassy to Jerusalem, similar to the actions of former U.S. President Donald Trump. However, this promise has yet to be realized, although Wahnish has established his diplomatic residence in Jerusalem, sustaining Argentina’s presence in the city.

President Javier Milei’s upcoming visit to Israel highlights Argentina’s commitment to strengthening ties and addressing issues of terrorism and defense cooperation. Through proposed memoranda and high-level meetings, Milei seeks to foster collaboration that reflects shared values between the two nations. His administration’s efforts, including proposed national security legislation, underscore a proactive approach toward safeguarding Argentine citizens. With Milei’s visit, the relationship between Argentina and Israel may deepen further, bolstered by mutual interests and recent humanitarian gestures. Overall, this trip represents a significant step in enhancing diplomatic ties amid pressing global security concerns.
