Putin Commends Myanmar’s Junta Chief During Moscow Visit

President Vladimir Putin praised the strengthening relationship between Russia and Myanmar during a meeting with junta chief Min Aung Hlaing. The two nations, both facing Western sanctions, aim to enhance trade and military cooperation. Amidst Myanmar’s internal conflicts, Russia’s support has been critical in sustaining the junta’s power amid rising opposition.

On Tuesday, President Vladimir Putin commended the burgeoning relationship between Russia and Myanmar during a meeting with Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s junta leader, who is visiting Moscow. Putin emphasized the steady development of bilateral relations, highlighting the significant potential for increased trade between the two nations. Myanmar relies heavily on Russia for arms as it faces widespread opposition against the military junta established after the 2021 coup.

Min Aung Hlaing expressed his admiration for Putin, referring to him as a “king,” and extended his support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. He expressed confidence in Putin’s leadership, stating, “I believe that victory must be yours under your strong and decisive leadership.” Both nations are currently subjected to stringent Western sanctions, attributed to Myanmar’s coup and Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Russia plays an essential role in supplying raw materials and fertilizers to Myanmar, and both countries have shown interest in enhancing their economic cooperation alongside military and political alliances. During a meeting earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin mentioned potential opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, such as energy, agriculture, transport, and telecommunications.

The military of Myanmar benefits notably from Russia’s support, particularly in terms of air power, as it confronts multiple armed groups and pro-democracy forces. Notably, the junta experienced considerable losses in territory due to a recent offensive by rebel forces, although its air forces have helped to stabilize their positions. Since the onset of military actions in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has prioritized strengthening partnerships with governments that oppose Western influence, especially in Asia and Africa.

In conclusion, President Putin’s statements highlight the strengthening ties between Russia and Myanmar amidst shared challenges, particularly under Western sanctions. The junta’s dependence on Russian military support underscores the strategic nature of their alliance, while both nations remain committed to deepening their economic cooperation. This partnership reflects Russia’s broader initiative to engage with anti-Western regimes around the globe.
