CABICOL members expressed that the ongoing struggle against historical divisions has impeded Liberia’s journey towards unity, stating, “For decades, we have been battling the ‘old age demons of division.’” They underscored the importance of recognizing the inherent rights of all individuals, emphasizing that every person is made in the image of God, endowed with rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The Bishops noted that the increasing fracturing of social ties has bred negative behaviors such as favoritism and nepotism, which are detrimental to national progress. They acknowledged that while conflicts are a natural component of society, those that escalate into violence undermine growth and social harmony.
Addressing issues of family division, CABICOL lamented that personal conflicts have also affected familial relationships, leading to separations among family members. They affirmed, “No human family is perfect. Rather, we are all called to perfection,” urging for mutual forgiveness and reconciliation.
The Bishops acknowledged the positive strides in Liberia’s democratic development following the civil conflict, which claimed many lives. However, they expressed concern that recent violent incidents, such as the arson attack on Capitol Hill, could jeopardize these democratic advancements and reverse the progress made thus far.
