Safaricom, the leading mobile operator in Kenya, has successfully completed the first phase of its data center located in Limuru, Kenya. This facility, situated in Redhill, consists of three planned buildings, with the initial construction phase focused on the first building now finalized. By January 2026, Safaricom expects to enhance the IT capacity to 2.8 megawatts during the completion of the second phase.
While the total IT capacity for the entire facility is yet to be disclosed, the company has confirmed that it will adhere to Tier III standards. Notably, the data center is designed to utilize free cooling mechanisms and will incorporate solar energy to supplement its grid power supply. Additionally, an innovation lab is included in the project to facilitate the exploration of new technological ideas, although specific details regarding the lab have not been disclosed.
Esther Karuga, the senior manager overseeing the Limuru facility, emphasized the project’s commitment to high industry standards: “When we call it world-class, we’ve already been tested in terms of best practices and industry standards, and that means we play in the same league with Google and Microsoft.” Limuru is strategically positioned near Nairobi, a region also hosting data centers from Digital Realty, Paix, Africa Data Centres, and MTN.
In addition to the Limuru facility, Safaricom operates three other data centers in the Nairobi region, specifically in Kisumu City, Thika, and Arena, as well as two facilities located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
