Marlindo Kifranco Ani, Akuol Elizabeth, Martha Korok, and Susan James Jokudu exemplify resilience, demonstrating their commitment to community health, empowerment, and challenging stereotypes within male-dominated fields.
On International Women’s Day, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) acknowledges the achievements of female staff in South Sudan, who are breaking down gender barriers in their communities. The stories of four women exemplify resilience and strength in emergency settings, showcasing their commitment to serving those in need through various roles traditionally held by men.
Marlindo Kifranco Ani serves as an AC technician in Juba, having joined MSF in July 2022. His responsibilities entail the installation and maintenance of AC systems as well as electrical work. Inspired by MSF’s remarkable history, he sought to be part of the organization. His training, including a trip to South Africa, has enhanced his skills and instilled confidence, encouraging him to empower other women in technical fields.
Akuol Elizabeth, the head of community health workers at the Renk emergency project, leads a dedicated team that provides critical care and health education in the community. Despite challenges such as floods and conflict impacting the region, she remains committed to improving health outcomes. Through monthly training and community outreach, her team plays an essential role in saving lives and enhancing community health awareness.
Martha Korok is a nurse working in Boma, Greater Pibor Administrative Area, representing one of the very few South Sudanese females in her field. She joined the MSF Academy for Healthcare, where she serves as both a mentor and a role model for young women in her community. Her dedication to nursing aims to challenge cultural norms regarding women’s education and encourage more girls to pursue academic opportunities.
Susan James Jokudu, a warehouse supervisor in Juba, has faced numerous challenges throughout her life, including fleeing her homeland during conflict. Driven by a desire to give back to her community, she studied logistics and joined MSF in 2015. Susan is determined to challenge gender stereotypes within her role, inspiring young women to succeed in traditionally male-dominated fields. She seeks to make a significant impact through her work and pursue further education in logistics.
The stories shared by these four remarkable women demonstrate the impact of female staff in the humanitarian sector and their dedication to changing societal norms in South Sudan. They address gender disparities, inspire their communities, and embody the spirit of resilience and empowerment.
