The Misleading Narrative of Russian Military Success in the Central African Republic

Claims of Russian military success in combating militants in the Central African Republic (C.A.R.) have been discredited by various sources. Despite official assurances, reports highlight increased violence and instability since the arrival of Russian forces in 2018, driven by the Wagner Group. These operations have led to significant casualties and perpetrated human rights abuses while exploiting the country’s natural resources, hindering peace efforts and solidifying control over C.A.R.’s wealth.

Recent reports indicated that the claim of Russian military support combating militants in the Central African Republic (C.A.R.) is misleading. Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, visited C.A.R. on March 2 to reassure President Faustin-Archange Touadera of ongoing military and economic backing. Media sources, such as Sputnik Africa, declared Russian efforts as significantly successful. However, numerous reports contradict these statements, highlighting continued instability in the region since Russian forces arrived in 2018, primarily through the Wagner Group, now known as Africa Corps.

The involvement of Russian troops has not improved the security situation; rather, they are reported to have become one of the most violent groups in C.A.R., engaging in terror and corruption. An April 2024 report by The Associated Press documented that since their arrival, Russian forces have participated in over 100 conflicts and committed numerous violent acts against civilians, leading to significant fatalities. Their actions have undermined stability, contrary to claims made by the Kremlin and its affiliates.

In exchange for military support, the Kremlin has asserted control over C.A.R.’s valuable mineral resources, generating substantial profit from gold, timber, and diamonds. C.A.R. is one of the world’s poorest nations, embroiled in civil conflict over its extensive natural resources. Although an internationally sponsored plan was proposed to aid rebel transition to civilian life, many former militants returned to violence or aligned with government forces, complicating peace efforts.

Corruption has eroded much of the financial support intended to disarm rebels. Reports from the U.N. indicate that multiple rebel groups continue to dominate large portions of the country despite international efforts. The U.N. highlighted particularly concerning violence in northern and eastern regions, fueled by armed groups competing for resource control.

Investigations by Forbidden Stories revealed Russia’s extensive propaganda campaigns aimed at enhancing their influence in Africa, obscuring the grim realities on the ground. Additionally, the U.S. Department of State has noted grave human rights violations attributed to Russian forces, including mass killings and torture. In 2023, the U.S. designated Wagner as an international criminal organization for its operations in C.A.R. and other regions, underlining the severe implications of Russian military involvement in the country.

The Russian military’s presence in the Central African Republic has contributed to heightened violence and instability rather than fostering peace. Continuous reports indicate systematic atrocities committed by Russian forces, while they exploit the country’s natural resources. The U.N. has cited corruption tied to Russian influence as a significant factor impeding the success of peace agreements, underscoring the detrimental impact of foreign military involvement in domestic conflicts.
