Workers are struggling to afford essential expenses, including rent, transportation, healthcare, and education, while wages stagnate and inflation continues to erode purchasing power.
The Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) reported that the average monthly living cost for a family of six in January 2025 reached K578,843. Consequently, a worker earning the current minimum wage would require nearly half a year’s salary to meet a single month’s basic expenses, revealing a grave economic injustice that must be recognized.
Despite the urgent need for wage reform, the government’s 2025/26 National Budget neglected to address the minimum wage or the tax-free band. While civil servants received a 20 percent pay increase, many private sector workers continue to endure poverty-level wages. The government’s inaction is a clear betrayal of the workforce that underpins the nation’s economy.
Opponents of a minimum wage increase often argue that businesses cannot bear the cost. However, this perspective overlooks the profitability of many businesses, which continue to thrive while workers struggle to meet basic needs. Meaningful economic growth translates into better livelihoods for all, not just a select few.
Increasing minimum wages also has broader economic benefits. With higher disposable income, workers can spend more on goods and services, spurring economic demand and growth. Conversely, maintaining low wages dampens economic activity, entrenching a cycle of poverty that stifles community development.
Furthermore, MCTU’s call for price controls on essential goods deserves serious consideration. Rising prices for basic commodities cannot be solely attributed to market forces; they also stem from greed and exploitation. Government action is vital to prevent unscrupulous practices that take advantage of vulnerable consumers.
The time for half-hearted responses has passed. The demands for a 100 percent increase in minimum wage reflect a moral necessity. The government must convene the tripartite labour advisory council to heed the voices of workers advocating for dignity and equitable treatment.
