Tragic Shelling in North Darfur Market Leaves Many Casualties

Dozens are feared dead following two hours of shelling by the RSF at the Abu Shouk market in North Darfur. This camp, home to over half a million displaced people, experienced a second attack in three days. The ongoing conflict has resulted in substantial loss of life and widespread displacement since April 2023, raising severe humanitarian concerns.

In North Darfur, Sudan, a recent shelling incident at the Abu Shouk market has left many individuals feared dead. The attack, conducted by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeted a camp for displaced people and lasted for approximately two hours on Tuesday evening, according to reports from local officials. This camp houses more than 500,000 displaced individuals and has suffered from repeated assaults, with this being the second attack in just three days.

The attack occurred during peak shopping hours, as many residents, in observance of Ramadan, were preparing to break their fast. Dr. Ibrahim Nadyan, a medic at the city’s last operating hospital, reported a range of injuries resulting from the shelling. Previously, on Sunday, the RSF attacked Abu Shouk, resulting in the deaths of six civilians.

The RSF has yet to release statements regarding the attacks on either Sunday or Tuesday. Since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, tens of thousands of lives have been lost, and millions have been displaced, leading to widespread famine conditions. Both the RSF and the Sudanese army have faced accusations of severe human rights abuses, with particular accusations leveled against the RSF for committing genocide against non-Arabic groups in Darfur.

Currently, the conflict has divided Sudan, with the Sudanese army maintaining control over the northern and eastern regions, while the RSF dominates much of Darfur and portions of the southern areas. Recent developments indicate that the army has commenced efforts to reclaim parts of Khartoum and adjacent territories from RSF control.

The recent shelling in Abu Shouk camp has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. This incident underscores the ongoing violence in North Darfur, with the RSF accused of repeated assaults on vulnerable populations. The broader conflict continues to disrupt life in Sudan, with profound implications as the battle for control between the army and RSF persists.
