Notably, between 2005 and 2020, India successfully reduced its emission intensity of gross domestic product (GDP) by 36%, showcasing an effort to decouple economic growth from emissions.
Experts have attributed part of the GHG reduction in 2020 to the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a contraction of 7.7% in the Indian economy. The government responded with various measures aimed at economic recovery and mitigating the pandemic’s impacts.
