Prakash Karat Critiques Trump and Modi for Promoting Far-Right Ideologies

Prakash Karat, in a recent state party conference, criticized Narendra Modi’s government and Donald Trump for advancing ‘far-right’ ideologies. He condemned India’s close relations with the U.S., particularly regarding military support to Israel, while warning of the risks of neo-fascism evolving unchecked. Karat urged for a more rigorous challenge against these ideologies, highlighting internal and external political dynamics.

Prakash Karat, the CPI(M) Politburo coordinator, addressed a state party conference where he criticized both the Narendra Modi-led Indian government and former U.S. President Donald Trump for endorsing ‘far-right’ ideologies. He characterized Trump as an imperialist intent on promoting American global dominance and depicted the Modi government as a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ exhibiting features of ‘neo-fascism.’

Karat expressed concern over India’s close relations with the United States, suggesting that it positioned India alongside oppressors. He specifically cited arms exports to Israel during the conflict with Palestine as a troubling example of this alignment. Furthermore, he asserted that India’s participation in the Quad—comprising the U.S., Japan, and Australia—was primarily focused on countering China.

He cautioned that as the U.S. under Trump’s leadership adopts a more aggressive stance, India risks becoming isolated from developing nations due to its alliance. He stated that the current government’s foreign policies reflect a character labeled by the CPI(M) as a ‘Hindutva Corporate regime’ showing neo-fascist tendencies.

Criticizing the Congress party in Kerala, Karat accused them of undermining the CPI(M)’s efforts against the BJP and RSS by disputing the use of the term ‘neo-fascist.’ He criticized Congress for misrepresenting the Left’s actions in combating these ideologies, labeling their behavior as ‘cheap politics.’

Karat highlighted the deaths of several CPI(M) activists, supposedly at the hands of RSS members in Kerala, emphasizing that this illustrates who is genuinely opposing the BJP in the region. He explained that the term ‘neo-fascism’ is specific to the unique blend of ideologies in India, incorporating elements of old fascism and neo-liberalism, along with the Hindutva ideology of the RSS.

Furthermore, Karat warned that failing to confront neo-fascism could lead to a transition into full fascism. He likened Trump’s actions to those of 19th-century imperialists, accusing him of attempts to reassert control over regions such as Greenland and the Panama Canal, along with suggesting the annexation of Canada as the 51st state.

In summary, Prakash Karat criticizes the alignment between India and the United States under Modi’s government and Trump for promoting far-right ideologies. He emphasizes the implications of such alliances, particularly in relation to domestic and international policies. Karat asserts the necessity of recognizing and combating neo-fascism to prevent its evolution into full-scale fascism, providing a profound critique of contemporary political dynamics in India and beyond.
