Sudan Initiates Legal Action Against UAE at International Court

Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the World Court, alleging support for the RSF and violations of the Genocide Convention concerning violence in West Darfur. The UAE intends to dismiss the case, claiming it lacks legal merit. Sudan claims that the UAE’s involvement has exacerbated ongoing ethnic-based conflicts.

Sudan has initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for allegedly providing arms to the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This case claims that the UAE has contravened its obligations under the Genocide Convention amid violence occurring in West Darfur state.

In response, the UAE intends to seek the immediate dismissal of the case, asserting that it is devoid of any legal or factual merit. An official from the UAE conveyed to Reuters that the allegations made by Sudan are unfounded.

Sudanese authorities have consistently accused the UAE of supporting the RSF, which has been involved in conflict against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for almost two years. These charges have been deemed credible by U.N. experts and some U.S. lawmakers, despite the UAE’s denials.

West Darfur, including its capital Geneina, has faced severe ethnic attacks by the RSF and allied militias against the Masalit community in 2023. “According to Sudan, all such acts have been ‘perpetrated and enabled by the direct support given to the rebel RSF militia and related militia groups by the United Arab Emirates'”, according to the ICJ.

An official from the UAE remarked on the situation, stating that the country recognizes the Sudanese Armed Forces’ recent application to the ICJ as merely a publicity stunt designed to divert attention from the alleged atrocities committed by the SAF.

In summary, Sudan has filed a significant case against the UAE regarding alleged support for the RSF amid ongoing conflicts in West Darfur. The UAE plans to dismiss these allegations, asserting that they lack solid grounding. The complexities of the conflict highlight international concerns over human rights violations and geopolitical dynamics in the region.
