UN Official Warns of Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

UN Humanitarian Coordinator warns of worsening violence in Sudan’s South Kordofan and Blue Nile states. Recent clashes have led to civilian deaths and humanitarian access issues, compounding the critical needs due to food insecurity. Calls for de-escalation and safe aid access are urgent to prevent further human suffering.

The escalating violence in Sudan’s South Kordofan and Blue Nile states poses a grave humanitarian risk, according to the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Clementine Nkweta-Salami. Recent clashes in Kadugli, South Kordofan’s capital, have reportedly resulted in at least 80 civilian deaths and numerous injuries. The situation has been further exacerbated by allegations of women and children being used as human shields, alongside significant barriers to humanitarian assistance.

In Blue Nile, escalating violence and mass mobilizations threaten an already critical humanitarian situation. Nkweta-Salami emphasized that civilians have faced prolonged deprivation of life-saving assistance and basic services due to medical supply shortages and the ongoing conflict. The region’s food insecurity is particularly alarming, with families relying on insufficient food sources, leading to a surge in malnutrition rates.

The UN official has expressed significant concerns about the potential for further human suffering if the hostilities persist. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023 continues to create a hostile environment, restricting humanitarian access and endangering civilian lives. Nkweta-Salami has urged all conflict parties to de-escalate and prioritize civilian protection while facilitating unrestricted humanitarian aid access.

In summary, the humanitarian crisis in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states is exacerbated by escalating violence and restricted access to vital aid. The worsening situation emphasizes the urgent need for conflict de-escalation, enhanced protection for civilians, and immediate humanitarian intervention. Without these actions, the risk of increased suffering and loss of life remains alarmingly high.
