The United Nations has called for accountability in the Central African Republic (CAR) due to serious human rights violations by armed groups. A report highlights that attacks have resulted in casualties and instances of sexual violence, torture, and looting. The United Nations has called for accountability in the Central African Republic (CAR) following evidence of severe human rights violations by armed groups. A recent report from the UN Human Rights Office and the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) emphasized the need for accountability to prevent future violations.
During attacks in the Mbomou and Haut-Mbomou prefectures, at least 24 individuals were killed, including victims of summary executions, which occurred in October last year and January this year. It was noted that the armed group responsible, the WTA, had historical ties to another group, Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé.
Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated, “Armed groups, including one affiliated with the country’s armed forces, committed grave human rights violations, mainly against Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers.” He further reported incidents of sexual violence, torture, forced labor, and the looting of homes and businesses, calling for justice against these crimes.
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged for clarification of the relationship between the WTA group and the armed forces, insisting on transparency about the group’s actions. He indicated that if accountability cannot be established, disarmament of the group should follow.
The CAR has faced ongoing instability and communal violence, particularly along ethnic and religious lines. UN assessments reveal that one in five individuals in the country is displaced due to conflict, with access to essential services severely affected as infrastructure damages schools and hospitals.
In light of the heightened violence, MINUSCA has enhanced its efforts to protect civilians and assist in reinstating state authority in the impacted regions.
