Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit awarded 35 contracts in 2024 worth CFA72.9 billion, achieving a high execution rate despite budget cuts. The budget was revised from CFA289 billion to CFA201 billion, with significant projects still advancing, including road rehabilitations and expansions, demonstrating effective management of resources.
In 2024, Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit, affiliated with the Ministry of Public Works, awarded 35 contracts valued at CFA72.9 billion, achieving an execution rate of 87.5%. This figure falls below the initially projected 40 contracts, which was already a reduction from the 71 contracts anticipated in a March 2024 steering committee report that estimated costs at CFA317 billion.
The unit’s revised budget for the year is set at CFA201 billion, reduced from an initial CFA289 billion projection. Thus far, CFA130 billion, or 64% of this new budget, has been utilized. Originally, CFA284 billion was designated for investments alongside CFA5 billion for operational costs.
Despite budget reductions, several significant projects have progressed. The unit successfully completed 13 studies, which included four studies on approximately 661 kilometers of roads. Rehabilitation and upgrades were conducted on over 193 kilometers of roadways, with 95% of the scheduled works finalized, and savings from various initiatives contributed to an additional 119 kilometers of municipal roads.
Furthermore, the financial resources facilitated the expansion of the northern access road in Yaoundé, which spans 22 kilometers, and allowed for the rehabilitation of the Mora-Tchakamari road located in the Far North region.
In summary, Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit has demonstrated resilience by moving forward with crucial infrastructure projects despite significant budgetary constraints. The completion of numerous studies and the rehabilitation of extensive roadway systems underscore the effective utilization of the revised budget, ensuring continued investment in national transport infrastructure.
