The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara. Al Budaiwi, the GCC Secretary General, emphasized this during a ministerial meeting with Morocco’s foreign affairs minister. The council commended the UN-led political process and Morocco’s initiatives, recognizing the kingdom as a central partner in the Gulf region, benefiting from various investments.
Rabat – Jassim Al Budaiwi, the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), reaffirmed the council’s steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, particularly concerning the southern provinces of Western Sahara. His remarks occurred during a joint ministerial meeting attended by GCC states and Morocco, represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
The GCC reiterated its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and endorsed the UN-led political process for Western Sahara. They welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2756 from October of last year, which extended the UN peacekeeping operation mandate (MINURSO) until October 2025 and urged Algeria to participate in the political resolution efforts as a primary stakeholder in the conflict.
Moreover, the resolution highlighted the significance of prior roundtable discussions initiated by Horst Kohler, the former UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, and recognized Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a legitimate political solution to the territorial dispute.
In addition to their support for territorial integrity, the GCC applauded Morocco’s initiatives, such as the Atlantic initiative, designed to enhance Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean. Other recognized projects included the Atlantic African States Process and the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline initiative, which were praised alongside Morocco’s economic reforms across various sectors.
Morocco has positioned itself as a vital partner for many countries in the international community, notably within the Gulf region. The kingdom enjoys robust relationships with several Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, who invest in various sectors such as real estate, infrastructure, and healthcare.
