Ibrahim Huweija, a former Syrian intelligence officer, was arrested in Latakia amid skirmishes with Assad loyalists. Notorious for his role in the assassination of Kamal Jumblatt in 1977, his arrest has prompted responses from Lebanese political circles. Huweija’s career highlights his extensive involvement in Syria’s repressive security operations.
Ibrahim Huweija, a former top intelligence officer in Syria, was recently arrested in Latakia, following a violent clash with Assad loyalists. He is notorious for his role in numerous assassinations during his tenure with the Assad regime, particularly the killing of Lebanese Druze leader Kamal Jumblatt in 1977. His capture comes just before the 48th anniversary of Jumblatt’s assassination, prompting a reaction from supporters of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP).
Huweija originated from Ain Shaqaq, a village in the Latakia governorate, which has produced several intelligence officers. He began his military career in the 1970s, eventually becoming the head of Air Force Intelligence in 1995 under Hafez al-Assad. His close association with Rifaat al-Assad, who orchestrated the brutal Hama massacre in 1982, highlights Huweija’s deep involvement in state repression.
Reports indicate that Huweija was implicated in multiple political assassinations during Syria’s dominance over Lebanon, a period that lasted until 2005. He is notably accused of managing the assassination of Jumblatt, who was shot dead in Baaqline amidst the civil war. Following his arrest, Walid Jumblatt expressed public sentiment by stating, “God is greatest” in Arabic on social media, reiterating claims that the Assad regime was responsible for his father’s death.
In 2002, Bashar al-Assad dismissed Huweija in an attempt to dilute the influence of the old guard from his father’s administration. This dismissal occurred after Bashar succeeded as president following Hafez al-Assad’s death in 2000.
The recent arrest of Ibrahim Huweija has reignited discussions regarding his past as a key figure in political assassinations during Syria’s harsh regime. His alleged involvement in the murder of Kamal Jumblatt and the subsequent reactions highlight the lingering tension between Lebanon and Syria. This incident serves as a reminder of the historical conflicts and power struggles that continue to affect the region.
