Iraq Ranks 12th in Arab World for AI Readiness in 2024

Iraq ranks 107th globally and 12th in the Arab world in the Government AI Readiness Index for 2024, with a score of 40.91 out of 100. The index evaluates readiness based on three pillars: government, technology sector, and data & infrastructure. The U.S. leads globally, while Iraq plans to develop a national AI strategy to improve its readiness further.

According to a recent report by Oxford Insights, Iraq has secured the 12th position in the Arab world and 107th on a global scale in the Government AI Readiness Index for 2024. This index evaluates the level of preparedness for artificial intelligence across 188 countries using 40 indicators in three main pillars: government, technology sector, and data & infrastructure.

Iraq achieved a total score of 40.91 out of 100, reflecting scores of 32 points for government readiness, 35.87 for the technology sector, and 54.25 for data and infrastructure. In contrast, the United Arab Emirates demonstrated leadership in the Arab region with a score of 75.66, followed by other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Jordan, each exhibiting scores that signify notable advancements.

On a global scale, the United States holds the top position with 87 points, succeeded by Singapore with 84 points and France at 79 points. To further promote AI integration and utilization, the Office of the Prime Minister’s Advisor in Iraq has announced initiatives aimed at creating a national AI strategy this coming July 2024, which would emphasize knowledge enhancement and further AI incorporation.

Iraq’s positioning in the Government AI Readiness Index illustrates both the challenges and potential for improvement in AI adoption. While currently ranked 12th in the Arab region, initiatives planned for July 2024 aim to fortify Iraq’s AI strategy. In comparison to leading nations, there remains a significant opportunity for Iraq to enhance its AI capabilities through focused governmental and technological efforts.
