Karua Condemns Odinga’s Engagement with Kenya Kwanza Government

Martha Karua has strongly opposed Raila Odinga’s interactions with President Ruto’s administration, deeming them unlawful without a formal agreement. She emphasizes the need for Odinga to choose a definitive political alignment. Odinga’s political future is uncertain as he recently completed a consultative tour, while also questioning the viability of Fred Matiang’i’s presidential aspirations, stressing the importance of nationwide support for any candidacy.

Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party, has firmly rejected any possibility of collaboration with Raila Odinga. Her stance comes amid heightened scrutiny of Odinga’s activities with President William Ruto’s government. Karua contends that Odinga’s position of straddling both the government and opposition is legally untenable. She has urged him to either formalize a post-election coalition with the Kenya Kwanza alliance or clearly align himself with the opposition.

Karua has criticized Odinga for his interactions with the government without a legally binding agreement with President Ruto, labeling these actions as unlawful. She asserts the importance of formalizing any agreements with Ruto following constitutional guidelines, highlighting the need to end what she describes as an “illegal cohabitation” within the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The political future of Raila Odinga appears uncertain. He has recently completed a two-week nationwide consultative tour, concluding with a meeting in Nairobi that addressed challenges faced by the Social Health Authority (SHA). During a forum in Wajir, Odinga dismissed any possibility of partnering with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Odinga has also expressed doubts regarding the potential presidential ambitions of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. He emphasized that the success of any presidential candidate depends on nationwide support, rather than reliance solely on regional votes. Following a consultative meeting with Kisii County residents, Odinga remarked, “Someone running for the presidency cannot be elected based on Kisii votes, Luo votes, Luhya votes, or even Mount Kenya votes.”

Finally, Odinga noted that he has not received any direct confirmation from Matiang’i about a potential presidential run. He characterized current discussions about Matiang’i’s candidacy as speculative, stating, “This is something we will deal with when the right time comes. Mr. Matiang’i has not yet come forward to speak and clarify that he wants to run for the presidency.”

In conclusion, Martha Karua has firmly disapproved of Raila Odinga’s association with President Ruto’s government, labeling it as legally absent and advocating for a clear political alignment. Odinga’s future remains in question as he navigates the complexities of his political relationships and potential presidential candidates. The emphasis on nationwide support for a presidential bid highlights the critical nature of broad electoral alliances in Kenya’s political landscape.
