Key Highlights from Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian’s Press Conference on March 3, 2025

The Ministry emphasized peaceful resolutions to conflicts such as Ukraine and dismissed unfounded claims regarding COVID-19’s origins, advocating for constructive dialogue in international relations.

The recent 62nd Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), held in Hangzhou, resulted in significant advancements in climate change assessment, thanks to China’s hosting of the event. The session concluded with the adoption of key contributions for the Seventh Assessment Report. This lays a critical foundation for global scientific collaboration in addressing climate change.

China has consistently positioned itself as a partner to Global South nations in green transition efforts. It has engaged in meteorological initiatives by sharing data with 132 nations and collaborating on early warning systems with countries such as Pakistan and Ethiopia, aiming to enhance climate resilience globally. Furthermore, China disseminated results of green innovation to over 100 developing countries, aiding in emission reduction and expanding green production capabilities.

In light of recent U.S. tariffs, Lin Jian reasserted China’s commitment to protect its interests in response to perceived unjust threats. The stance was clear regarding the context of the fentanyl issue, emphasizing China’s opposition to the tariff hikes.

Furthermore, a cooperation agreement signed between Pakistan and China regarding space flight marks a new milestone in their partnership, showcasing China’s dedication to peaceful space exploration and fostering developmental opportunities.

On geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning Ukraine, China aims to play a constructive role in promoting peace. Lin Jian reiterated that China is not a party to the Ukraine crisis and supports political settlements.

The issue of repatriated Chinese nationals from Thailand, reportedly Uyghurs, is managed within the framework of Chinese and international laws, ensuring the protection of their rights.

With respect to U.S. criticisms surrounding Taiwan and other issues, Lin emphasized that China firmly opposes baseless accusations and strives to maintain sovereignty. He stressed that trade hostilities yield no benefits and called for mutual respect in addressing economic concerns.

Lin Jian also commented on COVID-19’s origins, reaffirming that the narrative surrounding a lab leak is unfounded, as established by the WHO-China joint mission’s conclusions urging a global perspective on the matter.

Finally, he cautioned against using the Asia-Pacific region as a battleground for geopolitical rivalry, advocating for collaboration to counter protectionism and unilateralism while promoting the principles of respect and peaceful coexistence in international relations.
